Winner of "Kean Idol" Dance Contest Announced

Gibsonia, Pa. - March 16, 2006 - Kathryn Knapp, an 11-year-old from Gibsonia, was named the winner of the "Kean Idol" Amateur Dance Contest on Sunday, March 12 at the Kean Theatre. She was among 19 dancers competing in the talent show, which benefited St. Barnabas Charities' Free Care Fund. Knapp performed a dance routine to the song, "Name in Lights" from the musical "The Boy from Oz" to win the top honors.

Bob Logue, former radio personality on KDKA's "Undercover Club" served as emcee. Judges for the championship round were Lee Garrard, owner of Lee's School of Dance in Butler and dance instructor for 46 years; Jessica Reams, dancer, singer and actor who has performed with The Civic Light Opera and The Playhouse; and April Gruber, the education director and teaching artist with Dance Alloy. The top six finalists selected by the judges were Sodda Pop Kid of Arnold, Pa.; Kathryn Knapp of Gibsonia; Christopher Marince of Moon Twp.; Christine Marty of Sarver; Lindsay McGivern of Allison Park and Alex Toy of Freeport. The audience members voted among the six finalists choosing Kathryn Knapp as the Kean Idol, Lindsay McGivern as first runner-up and Christopher Marince as second runner-up.

The grand prizes included a portrait session with award-winning photographer David Guthrie, tickets to the Pittsburgh Ballet, a gift certificate to Dean of Shadyside Salon, a feature story in Northern Connection Magazine and a trophy. Northern Connection, Your Community Magazine is the signature sponsor; Blue Bird Bus Sales and Monarch Student Transportation are the event sponsors of the 2006 Kean Idol. Armstrong Cable will air the dance segment in the Butler, Mars and Zelienople viewing audiences on March 17 at 1 a.m., March 18 at 2:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. and March 19 at 2:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 1 a.m.
